    Description

ACORN (OR ‘KONGE’ IN DANISH) IS ONE OF THE VERY EARLY GEORG JENSEN FLATWARE PATTERNS, introduced in 1915. Designed by Jensen friend and collaborator Johan Rohde, who joined him in 1903 and created this pattern, the most popular of all time at Georg Jensen.
The Acorn pattern flatware was first exhibited at the San Francisco World’s Fair in 1915 and has been the most popular of the Art Nouveau (or ‘Skonvirke’ in Danish) patterns at Georg Jensen ever since.
The acorn is of course a symbol of strength and potential, as well as good luck, in Scandinavian culture. It stands for the seed of something wonderful or powerful that is yet to develop.
CHEESE cutter or plane/server measures 8 1/4” OR 21 CM tip to tip. The handle on this Acorn server is very substantial, much larger than on the flatware pieces.
The blade of the cheese server/slicer is stainless steel and the handle is sterling silver.
Blade is marked ‘Georg Jensen Denmark;Stainless Steel Raadvad).
Sterling handle is marked ‘Denmark Sterling’ and has the early oval hallmark from 1915-1930.
Vintage items shows some light surface scratching and may have other minor signs of age or wear.
Cheese server sterling handle was very tarnished, almost black, when I got it. I removed enough of the tarnish to make it presentable to photograph. However Georg Jensen’s collaborator Rohde loved the effect of oxidation or blackening of silver and often used it as a design element because it creates a lot of depth, so I did not attempt to thoroughly shine the silver.
